- Store price follows scope (products; payments; delivery; languages; integrations) rather than the emirate
- UpStream online stores start from AED 1,499 one-off; platform, payment fees, domain and care are separate running costs
- Shopify is quickest to run; WooCommerce gives more control but needs hosting and upkeep
- UAE checkouts usually need cash on delivery, cards and Apple Pay via a UAE-ready gateway, and AED pricing with correct VAT
- Compare quotes on ownership, included apps, product upload, payment testing and SEO basics
An online store in Sharjah, Ajman or Dubai is priced by what it has to do, not by which emirate you trade from. The number of products and variants, the payment and delivery setup, whether you need English and Arabic, and any integrations with stock or accounting systems decide the build fee. As a published starting point, UpStream builds online stores from AED 1,499 as a one-off project. On top of that you budget for running costs: the platform subscription, payment processing fees, your domain, any paid apps, and ongoing care.
This guide separates the one-off build from the monthly running costs, compares Shopify and WooCommerce for a UAE store, lists the UAE-specific checkout pieces that change a quote, and gives you a checklist for comparing proposals like for like.
The short answer, then the conditions
- Build fee: UpStream online stores start from AED 1,499. A small catalogue on a standard theme sits near that figure. Large catalogues, custom features and integrations move it up, and we confirm a fixed quote after a short scope call.
- Running costs: a Shopify plan is a monthly subscription. WooCommerce is a free plugin, but you pay for hosting and often for extensions. Both carry payment processing fees per order.
- Care and growth: website care starts at AED 299 a month and SEO at AED 799 a month (four-month minimum). Ad spend, if you run Google or Meta ads, is always separate from any management fee.
- Location: a Sharjah-based team can build and support a store for an Ajman or Dubai business remotely. There is no city surcharge. What differs between emirates is delivery expectations and how competitive your market is online.
Confirm current terms and VAT with us before you budget. The state of your product data (names, prices, photos and descriptions) changes the scope more than anything else.
One-off build cost versus monthly running costs
Most budget surprises come from mixing these two. Ask every provider to quote them separately.
| Cost | When you pay | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Store build | Once | Products and variants, theme work, languages, payment and delivery setup, product upload, integrations |
| Platform | Monthly or yearly | Shopify plan (billed in USD), or hosting for WooCommerce |
| Payment processing | Per order | Your gateway's rate, and on Shopify an extra fee if you use a third-party gateway |
| Domain | Yearly | The extension you choose, such as .ae or .com |
| Apps and extensions | Monthly or one-off | Reviews, subscriptions, Arabic translation, advanced filters, delivery integrations |
| Care and updates | Monthly | Updates, backups, small changes, monitoring (UpStream care from AED 299 a month) |
| Getting found and sales | Monthly | SEO (from AED 799 a month), ad management, and your separate ad budget |
Shopify or WooCommerce for a UAE store?
We build on both because they suit different businesses. Shopify is hosted for you, quick to launch and easy for staff to run. WooCommerce runs on WordPress on your own hosting. It gives you more control and suits complex catalogues, trade pricing or content-heavy stores, but someone has to look after updates and security.
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Plan subscription in USD. Shopify's pricing page in October 2026 listed Basic, Grow and Advanced plans, with lower rates for yearly billing, and showed prices that can vary by country. | The plugin is free. You pay for hosting and any paid extensions. |
| Payments in the UAE | Shopify Payments has a UAE page in Shopify's help centre. Using a third-party gateway instead adds a Shopify fee per order, which falls on higher plans (2%, 1% and 0.6% on Basic, Grow and Advanced on the pricing page we checked). | Connect a gateway through its plugin. There is no platform fee per order. |
| Running it | Hosting, security and checkout are handled by Shopify. | Updates, backups and security are your responsibility or your developer's. |
| Best for | Straightforward catalogues, fast launch, small teams | Large or complex catalogues, custom rules, stores where content is a big part of the strategy |
Platform prices and fees change, so check the live pages before you sign anything. If someone recommends one platform before they ask about your products, your team and how you take payment, ask why.
The UAE checkout details that change a quote
A store that would work in London can stall in the UAE if the checkout does not match how people here buy. These are the items that most often add scope:
- Cash on delivery. Many shoppers still expect it. It affects how you handle failed deliveries and how your courier collects and pays out cash.
- Cards and Apple Pay through a UAE-ready gateway. Shopify Payments, or a gateway such as Telr, Network International, Tap or Stripe. Each has its own onboarding checks and rates.
- Buy now, pay later. Providers such as Tabby and Tamara are common in UAE retail. Each runs its own merchant approval, so confirm eligibility before planning around it.
- Delivery across the emirates. Shipping zones and rates for Sharjah, Ajman, Dubai and the other emirates, clear delivery times, and possibly a courier integration that creates shipments automatically.
- AED prices and VAT. UAE VAT is 5%. Registration is mandatory once your taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 in 12 months, and voluntary from AED 187,500. Your store should show prices and invoices consistently with your VAT status.
- English and Arabic. A bilingual store means translated product data, right-to-left layouts and separate URLs that Google can index. Treat it as real scope, not a plugin toggle.
Costs that sit outside the website budget
To sell online legally you need a trade licence whose activities cover e-commerce. Depending on your setup it comes from your emirate's economic department (for example the Sharjah Economic Development Department) or from a free zone. This is not part of a website quote, but it can decide your launch date. Online selling is growing locally: SEDD reported 167 new e-commerce licences and 207 renewals in Sharjah in the first half of 2026, with renewals up 52% year on year.
Also plan for product photography if your current images are inconsistent, and for written policies: returns, delivery, privacy and terms. Shoppers look for these before paying.
Does the emirate change the price?
Not the build. A Sharjah, Ajman or Dubai store with the same scope costs the same. Two things do differ:
- Delivery promises. Same-day or next-day expectations, delivery zones and cash-on-delivery handling should match where your customers actually are.
- Competition for attention. Searches and ads in some Dubai categories are more contested, so the budget for getting found can be higher even when the store costs the same.
Two example scopes (hypothetical)
These illustrate how scope moves a quote. They are not packages and include no invented prices beyond our published starting point.
- Starter store, Ajman gift shop: around 30 products with simple variants, English only, Shopify, card payments plus cash on delivery, flat-rate delivery across the UAE. This is close to the from-AED 1,499 starting scope, plus the Shopify plan and payment fees.
- Growing store, Dubai home-goods brand: 300+ products with sizes and colours, English and Arabic, a courier integration, buy now pay later, and stock synced from an existing system. This is a custom fixed quote after a scope call. The integrations and bilingual product data are what drive the figure.
How to compare ecommerce quotes like for like
- Who owns the store account, the domain and the admin login from day one?
- Is the theme licence included, and which paid apps are in the quote versus extra?
- How many products will they upload, and who writes the titles and descriptions?
- Is payment gateway and cash-on-delivery setup included and tested with a real order?
- Are delivery zones, rates and order emails set up for UAE customers?
- Does the build include SEO basics: unique product and category titles, product structured data, a clean sitemap and fast mobile pages?
- What training and post-launch support is included, and what does care cost after that?
Getting found after launch
A store does not sell if nobody sees it. Category and product pages need proper titles, descriptions and structured data so they can appear for real product searches. Google Merchant Center lets eligible products appear in free listings across Google. For local trust, a complete Google Business Profile helps if you also sell from a location. We build these foundations into every store we make, and several of our client stores now appear for real product searches. You can see examples on our ecommerce development page.
Common questions, answered
Can I start with WhatsApp orders and add a full store later?
Yes. Many UAE businesses start by taking orders on WhatsApp. A store becomes worth it when the volume of chats, payment follow-ups and stock questions starts costing you sales. A good build lets customers pay online while still offering WhatsApp for questions.
Do I need a trade licence before the store goes live?
You need a licence that covers e-commerce before you start selling. The website can be built in parallel, so launch day is not held up waiting for the build.
Can you move my Instagram shop or old website products to a new store?
Usually, yes. Product data can be exported and imported, but it often needs cleaning: consistent names, prices, variants and images. That clean-up is part of the scope, so share your current catalogue when you ask for a quote.
How long does it take to build an online store?
It depends mostly on how ready your products, photos and policies are, not on the platform. We confirm a timeline in the proposal once we have seen your catalogue.
