- Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and there is no way to pay for a better Maps ranking
- A complete, verified Google Business Profile and genuine reviews cost nothing but time; paying or rewarding customers for reviews is prohibited
- The free WhatsApp Business app gives you a business profile, product showcase and greeting and away messages
- One clear page per service and area, written in the words customers search, usually beats a long list of services on one page
- Add a small, dated ad test only after the free basics, and measure cost per enquiry and per sale, not clicks
Many small businesses in Sharjah, Ajman and Dubai assume that more enquiries means a bigger ad budget. Often the cheaper fix is closer to home: people are already searching for what you sell, finding an incomplete Google Maps listing or a website that does not say what you do, and moving on to the next result. This guide puts the free and low-cost steps in the order that usually pays back first, and shows how to run a small ad test without wasting money.
It is written for owners of service businesses and shops (cleaning, AC and technical services, salons, clinics, restaurants, trading companies) who want more calls and WhatsApp messages without committing thousands of dirhams a month.
What is the cheapest way to get enquiries in Sharjah?
The cheapest enquiries come from people who are already looking for you. For most local businesses that means Google Maps and Google Search first, then WhatsApp, because that is where a customer in Al Nahda, Muwaileh or the Industrial Area decides who to contact. Paid ads are useful, but they work much better once those basics are in place, because every ad click lands on the same listing, page and WhatsApp reply.
| Channel | Money needed | Time needed | How quickly it can help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Free | A few hours to set up, then weekly upkeep | Fixes can show within days to weeks; prominence builds over months |
| Reviews from real customers | Free | A message after every finished job | Builds steadily with every job |
| WhatsApp Business app | Free app | An hour to set up; then fast replies every day | Immediately, on enquiries you already get |
| One useful page per service and area | Your time, or a website budget | A few hours per page | Google says some changes take hours and others several months |
| Existing customers and referrals | Free | A short message list | Within days |
| Small paid test (Meta or Google) | A fixed, small daily budget | Setup plus daily checks | Within days of approval |
Step 1: Make your Google Business Profile complete and verified
Google's own help page says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity", which it describes as relevance, distance and prominence. It also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. You cannot change distance, but you can control most of relevance and part of prominence:
- Verify the profile. Google says verified businesses are more likely to show in results.
- Choose the right primary category ("AC repair service", not just "Contractor") and add secondary categories only where they are true.
- Fill in everything: hours, phone, WhatsApp-reachable number, website link, services with short descriptions, service areas if you visit customers, and real photos of your work, team and premises.
- Post updates when you have something real to say: a seasonal offer, a new service, a recent job.
If your business does not appear on Maps at all, work through our guide on why a Sharjah business is not showing on Google Maps before anything else.
Step 2: Ask every happy customer for a genuine review
Reviews are part of prominence, and they also persuade the person reading your listing. Google's help page on getting more reviews suggests sending customers a review link or QR code and replying to reviews politely and briefly. The same page is clear that reviews must reflect a genuine experience, and that offering free or discounted goods or services in exchange for a review is prohibited.
A simple routine works: when a job is finished and the customer is happy, send one short WhatsApp message with your review link the same day. Reply to every review, good or bad, in a calm and professional tone. Never buy reviews or ask staff and friends to post them.
Step 3: Set up the free WhatsApp Business app properly
Most enquiries in the UAE end up on WhatsApp, so the way your number answers matters as much as your ads. WhatsApp's own product page lists a business profile, a product showcase with prices, greeting and away messages, and item sharing in the WhatsApp Business app. Set them up once:
- Business profile: address, hours, website and a one-line description of what you do and where.
- Greeting message: thank the customer and ask the two questions you always need (for example the area and the service required).
- Away message: say when you will reply, so out-of-hours enquiries do not go cold.
- Product showcase: list your main services or packages with "from" prices if you publish them.
Then reply fast. A quick, specific reply is the cheapest conversion improvement there is. Our guide on how to get more WhatsApp enquiries in the UAE covers reply scripts and follow-up in more detail. You only need the paid WhatsApp Business API when several staff share one number or you send messages at volume; see WhatsApp Business API cost in the UAE.
Step 4: Give each service and area its own clear page
Google's SEO Starter Guide advises thinking about the words a person might search for, and says helpful, reliable, people-first content is likely to matter more than any other suggestion in the guide. For a local business that usually means one page per main service ("duct cleaning in Sharjah", "AC repair in Ajman") instead of one page listing twenty services in a line each.
A useful service page answers, in this order:
- What you do and which areas you cover, in the first two sentences.
- What the job includes, how long it takes and what the customer must prepare.
- Prices or "from" prices, if you are willing to publish them.
- Photos of real jobs and, where you have them, short case notes.
- Common questions, and a WhatsApp button and phone number at the top and bottom.
Do not create near-identical pages that only swap the city name; write a page for an area only when you can say something specific about working there. If you do not have a website yet, a small focused site is enough to start. Ours begin at AED 999 for a custom business website.
Step 5: Use the customers you already have
Past customers are the cheapest source of new work. Keep a simple list of finished jobs with the customer's name, number, service and date. Use it to:
- Remind customers when a service is due again (AC servicing before summer, deep cleaning before Ramadan or Eid).
- Ask happy customers if they know anyone who needs the same service.
- Thank referrers personally. Keep any referral reward separate from reviews: rewarding reviews breaks Google's rules.
Only message people who have dealt with you and expect to hear from you, and stop when someone asks you to.
Step 6: Run a small, time-limited ad test
Once the listing, WhatsApp and pages are ready, a small paid test shows quickly whether a service can bring enquiries at a cost you can live with. Keep it narrow: one service, one area, one offer, a fixed daily budget and an end date. Click-to-WhatsApp ads on Meta suit most local services; Google Search ads suit urgent needs people search for.
Hypothetical example, not a forecast: a Sharjah cleaning company sets AED 30 a day for 14 days, AED 420 in total. In our benchmark of 21 Meta ad accounts, the median cost of one WhatsApp conversation was AED 5.50, and the middle half of accounts paid AED 2.28 to 7.92. If this test landed at the median, AED 420 would start about 76 conversations; at AED 7.92 it would start about 53. Some of those will be price checks or people outside your area, so the number that matters is how many become paid jobs.
For a real example, an Ajman duct cleaning campaign we manage started 498 WhatsApp chats at AED 4.01 each, shown with its Ads Manager screenshot in the duct cleaning case study. Budget ranges by platform are in our Meta ads cost guide for Sharjah, Ajman and Dubai.
How to judge the test
| What to record | Where it comes from | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Spend | Ads Manager or Google Ads | The fixed cost of the test |
| Conversations or calls | Ads Manager, WhatsApp, phone log | Shows the ad reaches interested people |
| Qualified enquiries | Your own notes on each chat | Removes wrong areas, job seekers and price-only checks |
| Paid jobs and their value | Your invoices | The only number that tells you whether to continue |
If clicks arrive but enquiries do not, the problem is usually the page or the reply, not the ad. Our guide on landing pages that get clicks but no enquiries lists the usual causes.
A 30-day plan for a small Sharjah business
| Week | Do this | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Complete and verify the Google Business Profile; set up WhatsApp Business profile, greeting and away messages | Free |
| Week 2 | Send a review link to every happy customer from the last few months; reply to all reviews; add real photos | Free |
| Week 3 | Write or fix one page for your main service and area, with prices, photos, FAQs and a WhatsApp button | Your time, or a website budget |
| Week 4 | Message past customers about due services; start a 14-day ad test on one service and area; record every enquiry | Your chosen test budget |
Common mistakes that waste a small budget
- Running ads before the Maps listing, page and WhatsApp reply are ready.
- Boosting random posts instead of running one campaign with one clear goal.
- Targeting the whole UAE when you only serve Sharjah and Ajman.
- Judging success by likes, clicks or views rather than enquiries and paid jobs.
- Replying hours later, or answering "price?" with only a number and no next step.
- Buying reviews or followers, which can get a listing penalised and does not bring customers.
When is it worth paying for help?
The steps above can be done by an owner with a few hours a week. Paying for help makes sense when you do not have that time, when the basics are done but enquiries are flat, or when you want ads and pages managed together. Our published prices are SEO from AED 799 a month (four-month minimum), social media management from AED 499 a month and websites from AED 999; ad spend is always separate and paid to the platform. The Meta ads management page explains how we run click-to-WhatsApp campaigns, and the digital marketing service in Sharjah page covers combined plans.
As proof of the organic route, the site we built for AC Repair Sharjah (acrepairshj.com) improved its visibility for relevant AC repair searches in Sharjah. If you want a second opinion first, ask for a free audit and we will tell you which of these steps to fix first.
Frequently asked questions
How can a small business get customers in Sharjah for free?
Complete and verify your Google Business Profile, ask every happy customer for a genuine review, set up the free WhatsApp Business app with greeting and away messages, reply quickly, and contact past customers when a service is due again. None of these steps needs an ad budget.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?
No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above or within Maps results, but they are labelled as ads and are separate from the free listing.
How much should a small Sharjah business spend on a first ad test?
Choose an amount you can afford to lose while you learn, run it for a fixed period such as 14 days on one service and one area, and judge it on paid jobs. In our 21-account benchmark the median cost per WhatsApp conversation was AED 5.50, which helps you estimate how many chats a budget might start.
Is it allowed to give customers a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's help page says offering free or discounted goods or services in exchange for posting, changing or removing reviews is prohibited. Ask for honest reviews and keep any referral rewards separate.
How long does it take for a new service page to bring enquiries?
It varies. Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging. Linking the page from your Google Business Profile and WhatsApp profile lets it start helping before it ranks.
Does this work in Ajman and Dubai too?
Yes. The steps are the same across the emirates. In Dubai there is usually more competition for the same searches and ads, so a complete listing, genuine reviews and a specific service page matter even more.
